Upgrading Tha La Reservoir Toward Sustainable Water Security

Upgrading Tha La Reservoir Toward Sustainable Water Security The Tha La Reservoir upgrade project in Tay Ninh Province has recently been completed and officially put into operation, marking an important milestone in strengthening sustainable water security for the region. The project aims to enhance water storage capacity, improve flood control, and ensure a stable water supply for agricultural production, daily use, and socio-economic development. Tha La Reservoir is located within the Vam Co Dong River system and plays a key role in regulating water resources for downstream areas. The reservoir supplies water for agricultural irrigation, domestic use, and socio-economic development across the region. After being upgraded, Tha La Reservior will create a premise for the formation of an ecological space to serve the community, in line with the trend of modern irrigation project management, in which exploitation goes hand in hand with water resource protection and sustainable development. However, after many years of operation, several components of the reservoir infrastructure showed signs of deterioration. As a result, its water regulation capacity and operational safety were affected, especially during periods of heavy rainfall and extreme weather events. To address these challenges, the upgrade project focused on reinforcing major structural components of the reservoir. In addition, the spillway system was upgraded to improve flood discharge capacity. Water storage and regulation systems were also enhanced to ensure safer and more efficient operation. The DT795 route passing through the dam body has been expanded. The combination of transport infrastructure in the space of irrigation works shows the new investment thinking of the locality. Following the upgrade, the reservoir’s ability to regulate water has been significantly improved. During the rainy season, the upgraded system helps reduce flood risks for downstream areas. During the dry season, it ensures a more stable water supply, supporting agricultural production and daily water demand. Moreover, the project contributes to improving the resilience of local water infrastructure in the context of climate change. By enhancing water storage and regulation capacity, the upgraded Tha La Reservoir helps mitigate the impacts of droughts and extreme weather variability. Beyond its technical benefits, the project also supports long-term water resource management and sustainable development in Tay Ninh Province. Reliable water infrastructure is essential for maintaining agricultural productivity, stabilizing livelihoods, and supporting regional economic growth. Overall, the successful completion of the Tha La Reservoir upgrade reflects Vietnam’s increasing focus on investing in modern, resilient water infrastructure. As water security becomes a strategic priority nationwide, projects like this highlight the importance of upgrading existing reservoirs to meet growing demand, adapt to climate change, and ensure sustainable water use in the future. The upgrading of strategic water resources (such as the Tha La Reservoir) demonstrates that local authorities and project investors are intensifying investments in water security and modern water supply management systems. These areas represent core segments of the solutions and technologies showcased at Vietnam’s leading water industry exhibition – Vietwater 2026.
From Hue’s Circular Economy Model to the Net Zero Goal: Driving Green Transformation for the Water and Environment Sectors at Vietwater 2026

The circular economy is increasingly becoming a key pillar in Vietnam’s sustainable development strategy and its journey toward achieving net-zero emissions. The practical implementation in Hue City demonstrates that, with the right planning and solutions, circular economy models can not only address environmental challenges but also generate long-term economic value. According to research supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the implementation of circular economy solutions in Hue could help reduce up to 89% of waste, increase GRDP by 4.5% by 2030, and cut greenhouse gas emissions by 41% by 2050, significantly contributing to the city’s Net Zero ambition. (Source: VnExpress) Circular Economy – A Key Solution for Waste and Emissions Reduction Rather than focusing solely on downstream waste treatment, Hue’s circular economy model prioritizes waste reduction, reuse, and recycling at source, optimizing material flows across sectors such as municipal waste, agriculture, construction, and plastics. Waste separation at source, the reuse of organic waste, recycling of construction materials, and the integration of appropriate technologies have significantly reduced landfill volumes. At the same time, waste-to-energy solutions, co-processing of plastic waste in industrial production, and effective wastewater management have played a crucial role in lowering greenhouse gas emissions. This experience highlights that Net Zero is not only an environmental target, but also a powerful driver for technological innovation, resource optimization, and economic efficiency, particularly for the water and environmental sectors, where resource flows are closely linked to production, consumption, and regeneration cycles. The Role of the Water and Environmental Sectors in the Net Zero Journey The water sector plays a central role in the circular economy, encompassing water supply, wastewater treatment, water reuse, as well as sludge management, solid waste treatment, and energy recovery from water-related processes. The adoption of smart technologies, circular solutions, and integrated management models not only reduces pressure on natural resources but also directly contributes to emission reduction targets. As Vietnam continues to develop policies on green growth, circular economy, and Net Zero, the demand for access to technologies, practical models, and international experience is becoming increasingly urgent. Vietwater 2026 – A Platform for Circular Economy and Net Zero Solutions Taking place from 4 to 6 November 2026 at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center (SECC), Ho Chi Minh City, Vietwater 2026 – Vietnam’s leading international exhibition for water supply, wastewater treatment, and environmental technologies, will serve as a key platform for the industry to address green transition challenges.
