In major cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, rapid urbanization has also found water supply facilities lacking behind. Water quality is yet another major issue, as polluted waters are found everywhere throughout the country, despite various attempts to clean up its water supplies. As such, authorities are urging for major protocols for wastewater treatment by cities, towns and major factories.
Hanoi alone needs more than 300,000 cu m of clean water a day to meet the demand of its residents. Currently, only 60% of the demand has been met. The average output of clean water is 430-440,000 cu m a day, which has seen an annual increase of 9.18% in the last five years. However, the rise could not catch up with the increasingly high demand of the city. Meanwhile, the loss ratio of water remains high, at 40.1% of the output.
Currently, the country has underway 170 urban water supply projects, valued at close to USD1 billion, which are aimed to provide clean water throughout the nation by 2020. For the rural regions, the government’s has targeted a plan is to provide 100 percent of the population with access to safe water by 2020. This ambitious target points out the potential for business in the Vietnamese water and wastewater industry.
